NWR was established to reconstruct prairie
and savanna areas: to provide habitat that supports grassland birds and other
wildlife on over 8,600 acres of the Walnut Creek watershed; and to provide an
educational opportunity for people to learn about the tallgrass and savanna
ecosystems. The goal is to reestablish the natural landscape which existed prior
to European settlement in Iowa.

The Red-Headed Woodpecker is just one of the many
rare and unique birds you'll see on the Refuge. This beauty is
present on the Refuge, but not always seen. (Seen every 2 to 5
years.) |
- We came to see the Wildlife Refuge. It
is already a special place. Finding your home too was a special benefit.
Thank you for your warm hospitality. It helped to make a brief stay a time
to remember.
