Essex is located in Southwest Iowa  near the Nishnabotna River. Highway 48 runs through the west edge of the city with Highway 2 and Highway 59 nearby. Essex is known as a Swedish Community.

The Wabash Trace, a family oriented 60 mile long bike path running from Blanchard, Iowa to Council Bluffs, Iowa is well traveled in the spring and summer months. Area parks include Pierce Creek and it offers camping facilities and fishing. Viking Lake State Park and Campground is located outside of Stanton, Iowa. Waubonsie State Park with many trails to hike is located one hour away just outside Nebraska City.
