The Big Red Barn is a 100 year old renovated barn located on the original
farmstead in beautiful Northeast Iowa. Innkeepers Clarke and Glenda Campbell
purchased the acreage in 1992 and were determined to repair and preserve the
barn. The idea for a B&B took shape in 2001 and The Big Red Barn Bed & Breakfast
opened for business in May 2003. It features a traditional atmosphere with the
country theme throughout. The rustic front porch leads guests to the main level
of the B&B, formerly the hay mow, where some of the original board flooring is
left in tact.
Local Amish craftsmanship is evident throughout the structure. Hand cut and
fitted, solid oak flooring was created and installed by area Amish carpenters.
The large oak dining table and chairs, as well as the king bed in one of the
guest suites are products of Amish craftsmen. Lining the dining room walls are
mementos from many of Clarke’s hunting trips, adding to the rustic theme of the
barn.
Original barn support beams contrast with the finished walls of the guest rooms.
Enhancing the comfortable retreat is two upper level decks accessed through
French doors. Guests may enjoy a southern view of the meadows and farmland, a
northern view of the pond, and may even spot a deer, pheasant or fox that
happens by.
A full breakfast is served in the dining room. Other meals are available upon
request. Guest rooms include 2 suites – one with king bed, fireplace, private
bath, private deck; the other with queen bed, private bath and private deck.
Also available is a guest room with two full beds, shared bath.
The Northeast Iowa area offers many attractions to visitors including outdoor
recreation/nature reserves, hunting preserves, antiques/gift/quilt shops, golf
courses, historical museums, restaurants, Amish stores and fall foliage tours.

northeast of Oelwein, 5 miles east of Maynard and approximately 25 miles east of
